Went home after Nick Iskierski's show and began this one. Cranked them on the headphones and tried to get my mojo back.

If he reverts now, it would be "neo art brut" ...maybe (since "art brut" would probably imply a specific time/art-era).

I would skip that lingo, but not overlook what Carlos is saying.

I personally like the drawing that you made as a child, more than this one! There I said it, but please don't take that as more than an observation. It's just my preference to enjoy art that is based on elements and principals (formal qualities) over specific subject matter. Making a painting about a rock stars makes your audience, (most likely) people who like rock stars. I like the white stripes, but not so much I would want a painting of them (or make one myself). I want my art to appeal to people who like art (even more than rock&roll!) I hope this isn't insulting and I hope it doesn't come across as me telling you what to do. It's very nicely painted, even if it's not my very favorite style/genre.

The one you did as a kid is imaginative (a giant?) and relies much more on colour and lines to communicate. It looks unbidden, unconcerned with showing mastery, more about making a picture (or telling a story) than showing you can paint. Again, just my observations at 2:30 am. =P

I agree with you Macri! I did say it was inspired by the Nick Iskeirski show though, which was primarily rock portraits. I have been struggling over the last couple months to paint ANYTHING. This one just kind of poured out really quickly after "sleeping on it" (Cleese video). No projector, all freehand with the exception of tightening the lines with masking tape. I never have patience and peel it too soon hence some blurs. I just prop the canvas next to my monitor (46x22") I took 2 different pics from the net and over exposed them so there would be less detail to freehand.
I chalk a rough outline then usually start molding the face with hairlines in black oil. I add my own facial lines and hair designs so it is never a direct copy.
I am hoping that it fixed my funk that had me sunk. Art Brut coming soon!

I seriously can't wait.

If you feel like some off site fun, come to Studio-Macri sometime. 880-0662

Sucks that I missed Nick's show (had to work). Can you get me in there sometime to see? Maybe need to adjust labels one night or something? =P
